morrgan04
Hi there, I am starting college this fall and am having some questions about my major. As of right now I am majoring in Human Development and Family Studies and minoring in Biology. The minor in Biology will fulfill my pre req cources for PA school. My question is how will my major affect (positively or negatively) getting into PA school? Thanks!
crossbone2007
It will not affect you in anyways. Get A's in all your prerequisites while getting HCE hours. And welcome to college Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Administrator rev ronin Posted June 22, 2013 Administrator Share Posted June 22, 2013 Positively, I expect. Biology majors look like med-school fodder who decided they wanted a cheaper/faster route. Major in something as outlandish and unique as you possibly can while getting your prerequisites done. Then, go forth and experience the world while gathering your HCE. Guest
Major in something that allows you to take a lot of biology classes. It will help with your PA education.
UGoLong
And pick something that will let you get a job in case you don't get in or decide to do something else along the way.
D.C.
My recommendation would be to get a B.S. instead of a B.A. Outside of that I don't think it matters that much for P.A. school.
G. Davenport
Thanks! It depends on the policy driving the pa program selection committee and perhaps the program mission. But realize being invited to interview or being offered a seat is based on MANY things, not just one. I advise looking at various programs (that you think interest you) and see what their interview and admittance criteria is based on. What is their mission, goals, etc. that may help. In closing, I think the path you outline above is a good one. It may change but you'll cross that bridge when you get there. Good luck.
sstrell1
I got a B.A. and I was wait-listed at one school and got in everywhere else so that really doesn't matter IMO. It doesn't matter what your major is. One of my friends majored in English and had a minor in Italian. She took the pre-reqs over the summer. Your pre-req grades, HCE, and volunteer experience are much more important than you're major.
cinntsp
The best route of all is to major in an allied health field or nursing. That way you're set up to earn quality HCE and will have a good job to support you while you engage in the application process. It's nice to still be able to make 40-50K+ if you don't get in the first or second time.
SoCal_PA
I studied Psychology and Business Administration at my university while taking my prerequisites at the same time. I had no problem getting into a program right out of school.
Staplemyfoot
Major in anything that interest you, but do know that PA programs realize that hard science majors are more difficult to obtain good grades, and that will be held in consideration.
