cinntsp
Not that this makes it any better--but is the min salary for certificate PAs and the max for master's+ with time in the VA? As in, would a master's-trained new grad start somewhere in the 70k+ range? IIRC, GS grades have a lot to do with degree level but I'm not positive about that. It's a joke regardless and I hope nobody takes the job but I'm trying to find some logic behind it.
mathwizard
Min salary is for GS-7 step1 I think? Masters trained is a GS-9, Certificate, Associate or Bachelors is GS-7, Masters with 1 year experience GS-11, GS-12 or above not defined. The pay is still low unless your a step 10. With the time in grade level which requires almost 20 years of service to reach step 10. Some locations pay more and receive locality pay but overall it appears pay is very low compared to national average salaries. I dont beleive many would work at the low starting salary that would explain the many vacancies the VA currently has. Even the majority of Physician salaries are starting low. I am guessing employees must negotiate a special salary or they wouldnt be able to fill any positions?
Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 10, 2013 Moderator Share Posted April 10, 2013 the only reason to EVER take a job for 40k is if it was something you felt compelled to do for reasons beyond money like a homeless clinic or a hospice in your hometown as a bridge to retirement or something similar. Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 11, 2013 Moderator Share Posted April 11, 2013 Some may be compelled to serve veterans. sure, but no reason to do it for less than the np in the next office....and it's not like the govt can't afford to pay a reasonable salary for this important work. this is the director of pa services for the VA: Denni J Woodmansee <denni.woodmansee@va.gov> PAFT has already contacted him about this issue. awaiting his reply. jsfelder0417
Agreed. Look at the NP slots for comparable positions and you will NOT see 40K being thrown out. Why the discrepancy? I am a vet, I would love to serve vets, but I would also love to feed and clothe my family without living check to check.

vet-up
look at the NP pay for the same jobs typical 80-120k because they are independent...... crazy The VA in Long Beach has 3 positions for NPs and it's opened until filled. Massive Fail**** Shadowed a VA PA before PA school, it was horrible. Endless patients, stringent formulary, it was like a factory. See what happens when Govt involved in the administration of health-care..... Gv't is already in health care - add up the Medicare and Medicaid patients and you have WELL OVER 60% (from the last study I read) of the entire population. Gov needs to stick to Health Insurance for the masses with private health care delivery - exactly what medicare is. VA needs to seriously look at it self. i am a Vet wanting to work for the VA in an under served area, yet they don't want to hear it, want to only hire NP (locally) and don't want to pay even close to a national wage rate...... strange indeed and reflects poorly on the VA
ohiovolffemtp
Did a rotation at a VA facility. Don't know the overall salary schedule, but a new grad PA there: masters & PharmD, was started at $86K. This was in psyche, not ER.
