PsychiatricPA
I graduated December 2017 and my specialty of choice is Psychiatry. However, the only Psych position that I found in my area was Locum Tenens for 6 months, outpatient. I can't move at this moment. Any advice? Should I start with this or wait for the right position? Loan repayment starts in May so I'm a little worried.
beattie228
Locums as a new grad has bad news bears written all over it. You'll be placed in a setting that is in dire need for a provider, and you likely won't have the oversight and training necessary to bring you up to speed. The age old saying of location, salary, specialty - you get to pick two applies here. Location is locked in per your original post, so either keep looking for psych gigs or jump into something else first to pick up some skills and pay down some debt would be my advice. Moderator EMEDPA Posted February 25, 2018 Moderator Share Posted February 25, 2018 solid advice above. locums as a new grad is a non-starter I'm afraid...
GoldenGirl90
can I ask what part of the country you're in? I have my heart set on the psych speciality when I graduate, and it's a little discouraging to hear that there are so few jobs -- I'm hoping it's just certain states that have that issue! I know some states really prefer PMHNPs
PsychiatricPA
I'm in OH. Tons of jobs for PMHNPs
Lexapro
From what I've seen (caveat, I'm a pmhnp), places tend to prefer hiring psych NPs because we can easily bill for therapy and psych evals. It looks like it depends on the state and the patient's insurance, but I've seen PAs be unable to be reimbursed for these things unless they complete a residency in psych or show that they had prior therapy training (LCSW or what have you) that preceded PA school. Same with FNPs attempting to practice in psychiatry.
DizzyJ
I did psych in Northern California and found the area to be open to PA or PMHNP. Relocated to Ohio and found maybe one or two postings that would consider a PA, but nearly all specific for only PMHNP.
PsychiatricPA
Thanks everyone! It seems Locums is not a good choice at this time. I already have interviews coming up for permanent positions so I'll be patient :-)
