Nucs2PA
Does it matter if the program offers a Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies or something else? I'm thinking it does not as long as you receive the certificate to sit for the PANCE. But, I would like to know for sure.
Administrator rev ronin Posted November 25, 2014 Administrator Share Posted November 25, 2014 Nope. Matters not at all. One of the professors in my program made a slightly big deal that we got an MS as opposed to an MPAS, because that meant we had to do a graduate project, but I've yet to see anyone ask about it in the real world. It's the PA-C, state license, and DEA in hand that employers are really interested in.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted November 25, 2014 Moderator Share Posted November 25, 2014 doesn't matter. my personal preference is MMS (masters medical science) and I think the postgrad programs should grant a DMS.
Nucs2PA
Thank you both! Why is it important to do a graduate project rev ronin? And why is your preference for MMS EMEDPA? doesn't matter. my personal preference is MMS (masters medical science) and I think the postgrad programs should grant a DMS. Nope. Matters not at all. UGoLong
It doesn't matter. My MPAS program required a thesis, so you can't tell that from the name of the degree either.

Administrator rev ronin Posted November 26, 2014 Administrator Share Posted November 26, 2014 Yeah, I didn't say that I was particularly impressed by that argument, but it seemed to be sincerely made at the time.

MMS explains what we are learning(medicine). MPAS sounds silly. we aren't learning assisting.
woodsters
It doesn't matter what they call the degree. I landed my job 4 months prior to graduation when I was yet to posses a degree, certification or licensure. Now granted, if I failed to gain these I would have not been allowed to start my job :-) And even after I graduated I was never asked my GPA or PANCE scores. The reputation of my program was evidence enough that I received a quality education. Although my degree is an MPAS, I do agree with the others that it sounds silly. PACdan
MMS explains what we are learning(medicine). MPAS sounds silly. we aren't learning assisting. My school splits the difference and offers a "Master of Science in Physician Assistant". Still awkward, but at least they put the "science" in there. lol
Joelseff
I Prefer "Medical Science" as well (MMS/DMS) but ehh...only one I think is a total abomination is the MPAP/DPAP (Masters or Doctor of Physician Assistant Practice-I dont know if these exist but I remember reading about the MPAP before) It sounds as silly as the one hanging on my wall (MSPAS) but I kinda don't want to have "PAP" as a post nominal. LOL.
PACdan
^^^ I would love to be privy as to why Lynchburg went with -PAM, physician assistant medicine, for their degrees.

I think they had to work hard to get the M on the end actually.

SoCal_PA
So, if my program grants us with an MPAP, can I go ahead and still use MMS or MS?
