emzemt713 Posted July 20, 2016 My stats are as follows: Undergrad: overall: 3.66 sci: 3.57 -graduated w/ honors. Many semesters took 2+ sciences. -awarded TriBeta research grant / wrote honors thesis. (Research 200+ hrs) GRE: V: 151 Q: 140 W: 4.5 5000 HCE in 3.5 years. All EMS. Also EMS special Ops member for 3 years 1600 volunteer 911 BLS EMT. 1500 stipend 911 BLS EMT. Supervisor EMS team used at large festivals/nightlife events. That's mostly where the other 2000 HCE came from. About 125 other volunteer hrs - Hospital volunteer, big brothers big sisters. I believe my personal statement is great. I have 47 shadowing hours - 20 in surgery, 27 in internal medicine. I am really concerned about that quant score on the GRE. It's a fluke. I got an A in college algebra and a B+ in Calculus for the Life Sciences. LORs - 1 PA, EMS boss, 2 profs. All of which really are on my side and care about me. Will I be considered a worthy applicant? Please give me some feedback.
UGoLong Posted July 20, 2016 You look like a good applicant at many places. I would consider downloading the quant study guide from the GRE site and retaking the exam. Busting 300 is a worthy goal. Good luck!
MT2PA Posted July 20, 2016 ^ agreed. If a school uses GRE to filter applicants, 290 might be prohibitive. Otherwise, you're on par if you apply smartly.
Petunia Posted July 20, 2016 ^^ agreed. If you are targeting non- GRE schools then go for it, and I think you look good. If you want more options, you need to redo the GRE. If you didn't do a lot of prep before, you may be surprised of how much you can improve by studding the math section for a couple months Good Luck!
emzemt713 Posted July 21, 2016 Author Thank you for the responses. One school I don't think I can redo the GRE for is Cornell - my top choice. This is because their deadline is in September. I was advised by a Director of the PA program there is no GRE minimum, however.... Could they still use a filter? And would it be wise to take the GRE again for Cornell? I just feel like I'll hear from them before they see a new GRE score if they are interested in me. Thanks again.
Petunia Posted July 21, 2016 Cornell is a really competitive school. I also applied there, so I am pretty familiar with the program. If I was in your shoes, I'd contact them and see if they will consider reviewing new scores, and if they say yes- retake it. I don't want to come off as mean, only helpful, but your quant score is 8%. Schools on average say to target minimums of 50% in each area, top programs seem to have most applicants between 60% - 80% as GRE scores. You can check the stats accepted page to see what GRE scores of people who have gotten offered interviews have been Good luck, and there may still be time, GRE lets you retake it every 21 days!! :) you could take it midaugust
MTOPAC Posted July 21, 2016 Definitely retake GRE..otherwise your application is great. But that GRE definitely brings it down. I studied every day for 3 weeks for the GRE and I feel as if that really helped me because I was familiar with the types of questions I would encounter. I think your score was a fluke too, considering the rest of your app, but I think it's very possible you could get turned down by schools because of it. You can absolutely score higher and personally I wouldn't think twice about retaking it (after some test prep). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Glorious_Ignoramus Posted July 23, 2016 Looks good - however you can answer your own question definitively by going to your prospective schools' admissions pages and looking at their data for the last accepted classes.
