Brei
I've read a couple different opinions so far and can't seem to find a consensus. Is it OK to use a patient's first name in my essay? i don't associate it with any diagnosis or even mention in the essay the name of facility where I worked at the time. Yes? No? Moderator EMEDPA Posted July 9, 2014 Moderator Share Posted July 9, 2014 sure. John was an older gentleman experiencing a myocardial infarction...., etc. if you don't use last name, age, race, or location you should be ok.
DiggySRNA
I used my student's first name in my personal essay and had someone associated with the PA school I plan on applying to review it. I received an a-okay so you should be fine.
andersenpa
Simple- use NO patient identifiers as EMEDPA says.
pdjags
NO. If you use a name, and a school assumes it is a real name, how will they know that you will not violate a HIPPA law in the future?? Stay away from names.
Topsy
An easy way around it is simply giving them a nickname: Mr. S, Ms. W, that kind of thing. It shows respect, makes it more personal than saying "this one patient," and if you have to refer to that person several times throughout the PS, I think it's pretty easy to read without any direct HIPPA violations.
