KrebsCycle
Hi, Those of you that had allied health licences/ certification before going into PA school (radiology ultrasound, RN, etc) did you maintain it through PA school or after?
jennelise
I still have my social work license. Not really sure why? A combo of nostalgia and fear of I might need it someday I guess.
sas5814
I kept my hunting license. I was an OR tech before PA school so I didn't see any point in keeping it up.
krisephillips
I was a respiratory therapist in my past life. I still maintain my certification/license. Figured it took time/money to complete the program and it could still be valuable if I needed to return to work in this area or to change specialties to pulmonary. weezianna
I was an ultrasonographer prior to PA school. I worked as a sonographer during the didactic portion of my program, and performed ultrasound exams as a PA while working in Ob/Gyn and cardiology. I have kept the certification. cc56
I was an EMT, I got it at 18. I let it go, but miss having it for nostalgia reasons. If things were bad for me and I lost my PA-C, I would probably NOT go back to being an EMT. Bad pay, heavy lifting, bad hours, bad pay, and I am old now. ohiovolffemtp
I've kept my FF and paramedic certifications/licenses as I still am a volunteer for my local FD.

Most importantly, you get to keep your screen name. I guess you can't move, either
Guest Paula
I just retired my national RD certification and state dietitian certification. I kept it for the 14 years since I became a PA. I finally decided I will not go back to being a dietitian and since I'm nearing retirement, there was no point to keep paying the fees and taking the continuing education required to keep my registration active. No regrets but I did slightly recoil at the strongly worded letter I got from the Commission on Dietetic Registration about surrendering my credentials and the warnings to not practice as a dietitian now that I retired the credential. Jeesh…….I still counsel my patients on their eating habits and nutrition but don't tell them I'm a dietitian.

It's nice to have on the rare occasion I have to detail some psychiatric issue that is outside the scope of my usual PA job. I can also see myself transitioning into a psych PA job towards the end of my career and that would be helpful.
