Moderator EMEDPA Posted November 2, 2014 Moderator Share Posted November 2, 2014 When you start you own practice hire a doc first in the area (likely state) hospital legal signs off then every piece of paperwork you get is addressed XWY Company PHYSICIAN LEADER I complained after the first few, now I just throw them out....... yup. I work solo the vast majority of the time. all the billing stickers for my shift have " Attending XYZ, MD" on them(the name of whichever doc was on day shift), even though they went home hours ago, know nothing about my patients, and won't be reviewing the charts because most of the time they are not my sp..my scripts and after visit stuff have my name on them because I write them, but every now and then random docs get billing questions about these pts they have no knowledge of and have to refer them back to me. SoCal_PA
Hopefully these situations are becoming more and more rare? Is there at least some improvement in recognition and respect in the past few years?
Acromion
When the cardiologist won't even speak to any of the PA's in the ED (even though he has his own PA) and instead asks to speak to the ED doc WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE PATIENT I AM CALLING HIM ABOUT. Seriously this happened to me a couple weeks ago. Had a young male with multiple syncopal episodes and a FHx questionable for HCM. Instead of speaking to me the cardiologist asked to speak to the doc. The ER doc then had to put him on hold and ask me what was going on so he could talk to the cardiologist. As far as he is concerned I may as well be a janitor.

I try not to ever call them and purposefully steer business with insurance to their competitors.

I don't refer to them much anymore.
Acromion
Thankfully, the docs I work with (save for one) are team players that value their PA's. In the first scenario, I believe the e-mail that went out credited the doc for liability and risk management reasons, so in case there was a bad outcome, a plaintiff attorney couldn't go back and say "Why was the midlevel seeing a patient with a carotid dissection?" In the second case, the attending doc told me not to take it personally, and that the cardiologist was an a-hole who hates his life and tries to make everyone around him miserable.
