cbrsmurf
Have an interview with Kaiser Permanente (big $60b/year multihospital company on the West Coast) soon. Their PA's are unionized. Are their wages/benefits negotiable? I've always worked for private practices, so I am unsure what kind of flexibility I have.
Administrator rev ronin Posted February 13, 2017 Administrator Share Posted February 13, 2017 I don't know, but as I understand it they have much better than average protection against unreasonable workloads.
anewconvert
There is probably a contract that union PAs get paid, and it's probably closed shop. I doubt there would be a lot of wiggle room.
mgriffiths
In my experience there is absolutely no personal negotiating when unions are involved. The only negotiating that occurs is between the employer and the union representative(s) on behalf of everyone the union represents. Otherwise it would defeat the purpose of having the union. There are always pros and cons to unions. You just have to make sure you look into the situation and how it works with the union specifically before making a decision. AbeTheBabe
Can I ask which Kaiser? I'm in ortho and I am considering moving to Kaiser one day. From what I understand they pay about 150K for ortho PAs and have excellent benefits. However, I heard they can be really overworked. Please keep us updated! Moderator EMEDPA Posted February 16, 2017 Moderator Share Posted February 16, 2017 I used to work at a KP site that was union. they will just plug you into their payscale based on your years in practice. you can't negotiate. 6 yrs experience, step 6, etc.
cbrsmurf
Thank you all. Update: They offered a position and I accepted. Speaking to other KP PA's, it is unionized and wage/benefits are non-negotiable. It's the same for everyone. KP benefits are good and they offer a pension after 5 years as well. Medical benefits standout in that they cover your family very well, but PTO (10 days) with flex personal time (5 days) were somewhat disappointing. They wage is above average and they pay for being on call as well.
AbeTheBabe
Which specialty are you in? What city? What's the pay like for your level of experience. I only ask because I hope to one day join Kaiser in ortho.
