Rocky Vista (CO) Accepted (Class entering Fall 2019)

Hi there! Does anyone know if they plan to meet the posted tuition and fees cost of $80,000-$85,000 that is posted on the main webpage. After looking at the COA sheet for the 2018-2019 school year it doesn't seem that would possible. With the first year of tuition and fees at $47,000, the clinical year would have to be much less... I sent an email to Sandy and Sarah and no one has been able to give me a clear answer. I quoted the website and reiterated that I reviewed the COA and they couldn't get me an answer yet. She directed me to check the COA for estimates for the next... Pretty frustrating. I'm super excited about this program, but I would like more information before I commit to more debt than I want. A slight increase is okay, but $10-20k more could be significant. Has anyone said specifically that the clinical year will be less due to less credit hours or anything like this? Thanks!

I just found this on the ARC-PA website:

 

"September 2018 The commission accepted one report (standard B2.08) but did not accept the other report (B3.07d). Report due March 1, 2019 (standard B3.07d). Program issued a warning letter due to the deficient report. The Warning Letter indicates that the commission has serious concerns about the quality of the program and that the program's future accreditation status may be in jeopardy. It is not listed on the ARC-PA web page. Approved maximum entering class size remains 36."

I'll post a link below to the website. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Thanks for posting that information. I am inclined to wait until more information becomes available before jumping ship. I think new programs might often get news like this that can seem concerning from the outside. However, without knowing the standards by which they are evaluated it's hard to know how concerned to be. I don't take it lightly though, and will definitely inquire.

For reference, here is standard B3.07d (in bold)

B3.07 Supervised clinical practice experiences should occur with preceptors practicing in the following disciplines: ANNOTATION: PA education requires a breadth of supervised clinical practice experiences to help students appreciate the differences in approach to patients taken by those with varying specialty education and experience. Supervised clinical practice experiences used for required rotations are expected to address the fundamental principles of the disciplines below as they relate to the clinical care of patients. Subspecialists serving as preceptors might, by advanced training or current practice, be too specialty focused to provide the fundamental principles for required rotations in the disciplines below. Reliance on subspecialists as preceptors in the disciplines below is contrary to the intent of this standard. a) family medicine, b) internal medicine, c) general surgery, d) pediatrics, ARC-PA Standards, Fourth Edition Page 21 Effective September 1, 2010 Approved March 2010, updated March 2018 e) ob/gyn and f) behavioral and mental health care.

This is my initial research and it seems that given the long list of standards, if only one section came up as flagged then the program must be doing something correctly. Furthermore, I may be missing something as to how the strong wording in the letter about danger of not being accredited in the future correlates to the one rejected report that isn't due until 3/1/19.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Thank you for finding and referencing the additional information regarding the rejected report. Reading over the details that you posted gave me a much better idea of what the warning was specifically related to. I'm sure that the warning will be addressed in the March 2019 report.

That makes me feel a little better. I don't understand how that one small portion out of an entire report could put future accreditation in jeopardy. Can someone else please ask and report back. I already asked about the tuition  and don't feel like pestering them again. I didn't really get a good answer so again, if anyone has any other information please share!

Hi there,

I plan to reach out come the new year. I too want to get an accurate picture of how much a loan I can expect to take along with the long term outlook for the program. 

Also for those admitted don't forget to sign your acceptance in addition to the seat deposit

Hi there Blair,

Yeah from the look of things, it would appear that the next class (i.e us) will be fine from an accreditation standpoint. The next comprehensive in March of 2021 will be after we start so no matter what the future holds, once we start the program we'll finish it with a degree. The staff is on break until the 7th so any questions about that report will have to wait a week.

Hi there,

I spoke with Allison from the RVU program and she said that at the time of the initial ARC-PA visit they did not have the required number of rotations in certain areas to give all students the required rotations. This has since been alleviated and is no longer an issue, but is something they cannot formally address with ARC-PA until March 2019.

Hello!

Just an FYI: As I was working on sending transcripts to Teri, I saw in the MyVista portal that the background check, drug screen and health records packet was added to the announcements section! I thought it might be helpful to get a jump start on some of those items, though I am sure we will hear from Sarah soon regarding those requirements as well.
