andrewb
I'm also in the first semester at USA. Happy to field questions. I recommend scrolling through the past couple years application threads. Some things about the process may have changed but, back when I applied, I found info from the past year's cycle helpful. My favorite things about South stem from the small class size. The upshot is there are fewer of you sharing the resources, and the faculty is really invested in your success. They take 40 students who have already demonstrated that they can be successful in the program. I'm not saying there's handholding (it's grad school and you need to bring your intrinsic motivation) and not trying to diminish the challenge. But there is no deliberate "weeding out." This program also knows how to put together a great class, so you know you'll be a part of an incredibly bright and dedicated team. It's a fun, cooperative atmosphere that may be rare at programs with larger classes. As for stats, I don't recall exactly but I posted somewhere in last year's thread. Takeaway though is that I was above the class average on a few metrics and low side of average on a couple, and totally average on others. My guess is that everyone who gets in has a similar profile. Which is what you would expect I suppose, since they are averages... Get to know both your strengths and your weaknesses.
DD2PA
Thank you! I had saw a post somewhere that stated that USA focused on underserved areas during rotations, have you found this to be true? Are some rotations in other cities which require staying in that city for the length of the rotation? I'm also in the first semester at USA. Happy to field questions. I'd also like to know what you think makes South's program unique, and why you like it? I'm curious as to whether or not you guys know about the "rolling admission" process this year. Ms. Dunn told me that they are not utilizing this process this year, and that submitting the application before the deadline isn't beneficial. Have you guys heard about this? It sounds like you had rolling admission when you got in.
andrewb
"Rolling admissions" typically means that offers of admission are made throughout the application cycle, with a possibility of seats filling before the application deadline. South didn't have rolling admissions last year when I applied. They began sending interview invites a month or so after deadline. Remember that your best information for the current cycle will come from the program. That said, to the best of my understanding, all applications received prior to deadline are scored and ranked with top candidates getting an invitation to interview. Candidates may well get an admission offer before the interview cycle is over, but that's different than rolling admissions. It's logical for the school to extend offers as soon as they identify their best candidates. I am hesitant to editorialize because I don't have much better insight into the admissions process than you do, but... don't overthink when you submitted your application, when you get your interview, etc. If the program says they are looking at all the apps in this certain way, and each app gets the same consideration whether submitted earlier or later, that's what they are doing. They're not gonna mislead you. I understand how nerve wracking it is, and as time goes on your tendency to overthink the process will only increase. That's inevitable I'm afraid. Communicate clearly and professionally when you confirm submission/receipt of all your application requirements, and your app will get the due consideration- and review your materials to make sure you meet minimum requirements before submitting. I hope I don't come across condescending by putting a fine point on that, but according to our class data (up on the program website now) 741 apps got rejected last year bc they didn't meet minimum requirements! Which means, for our cycle, just following the plainly stated directions immediately put candidates ahead of >60% of applicants.
