Moderator EMEDPA Posted July 28, 2016 Moderator have recently seen several folks over 65 with bad hx of cad, htn, pvd, etc using meth. what the heck folks? really? I asked one guy why he was using meth in his 70s and he said "because I can't afford cocaine anymore...." currently treating someone with htn crisis likely brought on by meth...I just don't get it.
Maverick87 Posted July 28, 2016 Probably functional drug addicts that are now retired and on social security.

Maverick87 Posted July 29, 2016 c'mon though, do something more sensible that won't kill your bp. smoke opium or something... Still more productive than the 33 year old health care provider that was in my office yesterday demanding Xanax that we ended up needing to call the cops on. I'll trade you.
Reality Check 2 Posted July 29, 2016 My elderly "junkies" aren't using street drugs at all - they are addicted to ambien, benzos, hydrocodone and won't touch pot much less anything else. Some don't even drink. But, heaven help you if you try to take away anything on the Beer's List - then I am evil and unsympathetic....... So do the elderly on meth get all hyped up and have a lot of energy or are some old ADD folks who just get mellow? I have no idea what appeal any of that would have to anyone at any age. Beyond me. Most of my older folks can hardly afford their legit meds - where are these folks getting money for street drugs???
bike mike Posted July 29, 2016 Yep, I've seen patients in their 60's-70's with HFrEF and still doing meth. They are ususlly "balancing it out" with a liter of booze and a pack of cigarettes each night.
medic25 Posted July 29, 2016 Not much meth in my part of the country, but I recently saw some data on the ages of cocaine users in our city. I was amazed at how many were in their 60-70's and are still out scoring on the street.
sk732 Posted July 30, 2016 While the most of my elderly ER patients have Benzo, Rx narcotic and Z-Drug habits, you still see the odd ex hippie who's doing coke, heroin or 8 Balls...some with acid or shrooms as well. I'm sure the closer to the bigger city out here, the worse it likely is. My guess some of your older cokeheads also are Viagra addicts...at least the Viagra will offset the BP for a bit ;-D. SK
