ajnelson
So, I've been kind of MIA from here for a while, and I've realized I've missed the forum :) Anyways....trying to get some insight from you well seasoned EM PAs. Currently I'm in the greater Phoenix area, and I've been going back and forth about leaving the area for quite some time, and so now I've finally made the decision to get out of here in the near future. I've begun the job search, but since I have no idea where I want to end up, I'm looking for some advice. I don't have any specific ties to anywhere specific in the country (I have family and friends in upstate SC and throughout NYS, though I'm not necessarily looking in those areas as I know the job markets aren't all that great). I'm looking for a lifestyle change. I love what I do, but feel there is so much 'meat market' push people through and make them happy....I want to try and get back to working in an environment where there is more focus on doing the right things for the patient. I also have a really great scope of practice here in AZ, so while I understand there may be some concessions, I don't want to lose too much. I'm really looking for a progressive environment, where I have some room to grow and learn. So, if you guys have any input on where (as in what states/locations) to narrow my job search down to I would welcome any advice. And of course, if any of you guys have any leads or know of any good places to work, I'll take that advice too!
Administrator rev ronin Posted May 29, 2015 Administrator Share Posted May 29, 2015 Washington's not bad, but if you can stand the environmental (and I mean climate/weather) shift, consider relocating to Alaska. I've seen a lot of cool looking jobs up there, but in locations where my family would murder me if I tried to take them. :-)
akdEM
North Carolina is a pretty nice place. Especially PA friendly, close to the beach, close to the mountains, mild climate, and some pretty cool cities (Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). I'd give it a look! thomasrconnor1
Although "only" a 19 year old pre-PA student, I work part time as a tech in my hospital's ED in upstate New York. Although in most areas of practice are quite friendly for the PAs in this region, the EM community in our area is quite dismissive of EMPAs and delegates them to fast track sections and urgent care clinics. If you're looking to practice in NYS, I would highly recommend going downstate where salaries are higher and where your scope of practice will be much less restricted. Moderator EMEDPA Posted May 30, 2015 Moderator Share Posted May 30, 2015 talk to geobrothers about working for his group in VT. arguably the best em pa job in the country...I would be there if I had no ties to the west coast...
ajnelson
Thanks E, I certainly will. I've had a few interviews with the mayo system and another interview set up. Just trying to decide where I want to be. And, thomasrconnor1, I'm originally from the Western NY area. While I do miss it, I'm not sure I want to move back, mainly for the reasons you stated. I worked EMS in WNY, and found it was a bit of an even mix, 1 hospital we transported to only had 2 doctors/ doc and PA on at a time, and with the more competent PA they would trade off on patients that were brought in, regardless of acuity. From my outsiders/ pre-PA student perspective, it seemed largely a matter of finding the right hospital system to work in. Regardless, good luck finding an amazing job, with no geographic restrictions hopefully you'll find something perfect for you!

I, too, worked EMS in Buffalo (and some of the surrounding area)...albeit, more than a decade ago. I'm honestly not looking to go back to WNY for multiple reasons, even though it will always be 'home'. I do enjoy coming back for a visit regularly though :)
Guest Paula
You can come join me in Northern Wisconsin. Lots of beautiful weather in the summer, ticks, mosquitos, lakes, forests, hunting, fishing, snowstorms, bear, deer, turkeys, hiking, no shopping or malls and rural practice in family medicine. One of my colleagues is going to part-time starting Jan 2015. Nice midwestern people with accents or so I'm told. The group I work with is great but of course administration is the same as most practices now.......money and production. I don't think we will ever solve that problem.
