Busiest PA single-coverage ED???

Recommended Posts

Wondering what the busiest ED is that allows PAs to do single coverage.

One place I work is single coverage that alternates MDs and PAs that will probably hit 9000 visits this year.

Need a helping hand when hit 10k.

That volume at times can be uncomfortable but usually what is needed is not necessarily another provider but more nurses. A dedicated triage nurse and ED nurses that know how to function and can 'tee up' patients for you is very helpful. Triage protocols help immensely to continue with workflow and throughput.

Last, documentation requirements have to be realistically looked at along with the tools used. Tsheets, dictating or best of breed EMRs can be an asset. The ED module of most integrated EMRs arent.

the single coverage dept I work at has around 5000/yr. we staff PA or MD + 1 RN and 1 ed tech who doubles as unit secretary. the hospital also has 12 medical beds and 3 ICU beds. we can pull RNs or techs from the floor if the ED gets busy and there is an on call FP MD to manage the floor and ICU pts for routine stuff. emergencies on the floor or ICU are managed by the ED provider. The hospital is the base station for the local medics who live in quarters across the parking lot from the hospital. If the medics aren't out on a call we can get them to help in the dept as well.

we see mostly high acuity, elderly pts as well as the full range of trauma, ODs, etc.

It's a great gig. I hope to be the full time guy there in a few years.

The ED where I work is PA only, 18k visits per year, and we sometimes have double and triple coverage depending on day of the week and season.  Ski season is busy as is summertime.  The fun of northern New England.
