GetMeOuttaThisMess
Has anyone read the story at CNN's website today regarding the treatment of an isolated case of traumatic brain injury with omega-3 fatty acids? It is the first I've heard of it.
cinntsp
I haven't seen the CNN story but have read a few journal articles on high dose fish oil in TBI. IIRC, they were using 20g+ per day with some decent results.
cbrsmurf
I can't even begin to imagine how smelly your poop would be.... But if your TBI is severe enough, guess it won't really matter except to the CNA's
KMD16
Insufficient literature/research to support TBI treatment using fish oil.
whoRyou
I know there has been some research on alternative ADHD treatments which has suggested a daily fish oil capsule can help curb the symptoms of attention deficit without medication. KMD16
Not enough literature to support. Show me at least 2 studies done in the US.
Guest JMPA
if it does no harm then it should be used on all tbi, "not enough literature" is a poor foundation for rejection of a non-harmful but potentially helpful treatment. i would consider it CAM. TBI should be treated agressively with all available treatments, as one would treat their own family
KMD16
It's called evidence base medicine. Yes. It should be put on the table as treatment option.
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Part of the reason why I posted the thread was to bring up the interaction between the family of the patient in question and the healthcare providers.
discogenic
Part of the reason why I posted the thread was to bring up the interaction between the family of the patient in question and the healthcare providers. How do you feel about that interaction?
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Based on the article as written, and assuming that it played out as described, I think the response from the medical providers were consistent with what most would tell family members. The fact that the family didn't accept the recommendations of the providers and performed research on their own and then became insistent on a trial of said therapy, it sounds somewhat familiar with what has recently taken place in Oakland, California with the child and the tonsillectomy complications. Speaking for myself, and knowing my own personality, I probably would not have dealt well with their aggressive approach as I interpreted it in the article. I was surprised to read about the improvement and took this to heart.
