fakingpatience
Has anyone seen any information out there on how competitive it is to earn a spot in a residency? PA schools publish the number of applicants vs the number of students they accept, but I haven't seen anything similar for the residencies I've looked into
JMann
In my experience, they are more competitive than you imagine they will be. No hard numbers to back that up. Only way you might get hard numbers is by contacting the programs individually. I've interviewed at 5 EM residencies over the last 6-7 months before being accepted to my top choice. I declined two more interviews this week. Most programs have 2-3 spots and interview 2-3 candidates for each spot. One program interviewed 17 folks for 3 spots. They claimed that those 17 were the top 5-10% of applicants. I took that with a grain of salt, but they did accept NPs, so who knows. If you are looking into doing a residency, be aware that there can be a slight edge to local applicants. I had several interviews where I found myself among strong applicants from local PA programs who had rotated with the interviewers or had worked with them prior to PA school as scribes or techs. Breaking into this circle from out of town or state can be tough. From the residencies perspective, taking a local applicant, especially one you've worked with clinically, is hard to fault. I would likely do the same in their shoes. I'm not saying programs don't strongly consider outside candidates, just be aware that you need to have a strong application and have strong answers to "why EM", "why a residency", and "why our residency." JMann
What are some good ways to make oneself a more desirable candidate for a Residency Spot? Have an EMS background. Do multiple EM related rotations during clinicals. ACLS, PALS, etc. SEMPA membership. Good GPA during PA school.
cinntsp
What are some good ways to make oneself a more desirable candidate for a Residency Spot? Have a good GPA, applicable clinical rotations, good letters of recommendation, etc. It's the same thing as applying to PA school.

What kind of GPA should one aim for to get? Thanks.

bike mike
Your PA school GPA should be at least 3.5 to make yourself competitive. You should also do at least one rotation in whatever kind of residency you are going for. For me, I did a rotation in CT surgery and another in cardiology as I knew I wanted to do a cardiology residency.
