Urgent Care CME, conferences, organizations?

Recommended Posts

I've transitioned to UC now after 5 years in the ED in search of more time to spend with family, so there's already a good deal of overlap and I've been to my share of EM CME conferences thus far.  Curious as to what is out there that's UC-centric, however, and interested in opinions of others who have worked in UC longer than I have?  I've looked some things up online, but primarily interested in opinions from fellow PAs.

Open to any suggestions, but a couple I had seen and was interested in feedback on:

Urgent Care Assoc. of America (is this organization worthwhile to join, are their conferences any good?  I paid $50 for just a JUCM subscription alone they offer this year, wondering what the $195 dues offer on top of that?)

Hippo ED Urgent Care Rap (ditto - any good?)

Ortho ED (not specifically UC, but was looking at boning up on rads/MSK - worth the membership?)

...and anything else you might suggest?  Thx in advance!

Primary Care Medical Abstracts/Emergency Medical Abstracts at CCME.org..  Contributors are a mix of IM/FM/EM physicians but they touch on everyday topics that one would see in any of the settings.  The thing I like about their abstract reviews (30/mo.) is that they think for themselves and don't suck up to the common day thoughts on issues.  They just look at the cold, hard facts and I really respect that.  Ex.-strep throat doesn't matter, forget OM as being a source for fever (saw a classic example yesterday of gnarly ears but no otalgia or fever), people don't need abx. for acute bronchitis, no need for pre-op lab since it doesn't change surgical status almost ever, don't need abx. once you drain an abscess, why no controlled studies of new meds against old-school meds as opposed to placebo, etc..  You get a max of 4 hrs. Cat. I CME/mo..  Very reasonably prices IMO.

Application?  I have taken their information and since I became the sole-provider in our clinic (3 weeks ago) only one rapid strep screen has been done (family insistence) since I don't consider a sensitivity of 59% and a PPV of 70% reliable in an adult.  If you ask Dr. Google you'll find everyone commenting on how reliable the tests are.  Sure they are, if you can charge $25-$30/test to the pt..  Source of my information?  PubMed 2010 study in Peds J. of Oto. whose study was done on our Quidel product.  Crazy thing?  They found the tests to be valid with these values!
