MedicalRN
Quick question - does anyone here think the reputation of a PA program in any way effects the reputation of an NP program? Does the quality of the PA program have any effect on the NP program quality? I ask this because I am very interested in Duke University, applying to either their PA or NP program. I have the stats, I think, and I know for PA they are ranked number 1. I feel as a PA student I would get an excellent education - but what about as an NP student? Will they share any labs/professors? Could the PA program be number 1 and the NP program be complete sh*t? Anyone know anything about their NP program? I know plenty about the PA program (which is what I am leaning towards) but know nothing about the NP program except that it seems to be very competetive. Thanks! Moderator EMEDPA Posted February 21, 2014 Moderator Share Posted February 21, 2014 I believe they have a well ranked program but would be surprised if they shared any classes or faculty as they are taught by different departments (medicine vs nursing). SocialMedicine
PA school ranking is very subjective/flawed. That being said Duke is an excellent program. I am sure nursing is also a quality experience. Shadow some people and decide on a profession. Your potential future specialty may have something to do with your decision. UpRegulated
I believe they have a well ranked program but would be surprised if they shared any classes or faculty as they are taught by different departments (medicine vs nursing). Call Duke and ask. My school shares a few faculty members between medicine, PA, NP.
bobsquit3
I'm a current Duke PA student and we have never shared a class or a professor (that I know of) with an NP. We share on class with MD and DPT students, but no NP students. I honeslty couldn't tell you a single thing about the NP program other than a lot of the RNs do the NP program at Duke because Duke pays for it if you were there are an RN for 3 years. Hope that helps.
taotaox1
If I had not met one of the NP students by accident, I would never have known we even have an NP program. I am sure duke has a good one, but there is no crossover in anything. Not even a little bit.
MedicalRN
Did the student you met have anything to say about the program?
taotaox1
Not much other than they had a lot more free time than we seemed to.

Moderator True Anomaly Posted February 26, 2014 Moderator Share Posted February 26, 2014 Have you tried asking on Allnurses about Duke's NP program?
Lexapro
One of the NPs who posts often on allnurses and seems very well trained and competent went to Duke... you could try looking them up.
