ALombardo
Hi everyone, Just hoping for some input... I am starting my third and final semester of didactic year (yay!) :=D: and trying to schedule my clinical rotations. I am currently attending a program six hours away from my fiancee and family. Unfortunately, I have to do my first rotation near the school. With that being said, I am trying to schedule the most grueling/time consuming rotation as my first rotation. I understand they will all be challenging but what one did you personally find required the most time away from loved ones? Thanks in advance! Administrator rev ronin Posted January 14, 2013 Administrator Share Posted January 14, 2013 Surgery was hugely time consuming, but not particularly hard. My most challenging rotation was inpatient, but that was more of a preceptor issue, in my mind.

Andreasmo
Do you know anyone that has graduated from your program/ have an advisor that could possibly find out what the majority of people have said while in yours?

med218
General Surgery - 80 hours/week Inpatient Medicine - 70+ hours/week That being said I know people who had general surgery elsewhere and did 50 hours/week and inpatient medicine with 45 hours/week
PAruby
I think it depends on the school and preceptor. In our program, internal medicine is known to be the hardest because of the amount of content you need to be familiar with on top of long hours, PLUS the EOR exam is supposedly the hardest too (Haven't gotten there yet). Surgery comes in second according to our students due to long hours and call... I'm sure that some OB rotations are harder than some surgery rotations or more hours, etc... but I would say the most complex and content-heavy ones will be the hardest. ALombardo
Thanks everyone! I am attending a program that over 6 hours from where I will be doing my rotations so they can't really tell me... However, the general consensus seems to be that surgery is the most time consuming. I appreciate everyones input
kayakr
It's all different from place to place, but in general - surgery and internal medicine are usually long hours.

Classof2013
My surgery rotation was easy. It's my ER rotation that's killing me. Plus switching between days and nights is a killer.

UGoLong
As far as time goes, I vote for surgery. It was an hour away at started by 0600. I slept overnight at the hospital a time or two. Everything else was like a 10-12 hour job, other than ER, which was scheduled shifts.
