Shadowing NP instead of PA?

Recommended Posts

Finally got a call from a local health system about my application to shadow.  I asked to shadow a PA but instead they gave me 30 hours of shadowing different NPs. Do you think this will be acceptable to most programs since both are mid-levels?  I have another 15 hours shadowing a doc and 25 shadowing a PA in other specialties.

Midlevels are midlevels. I think PA is preferable if this is the profession you want to pursue. Keep in mind the purpose of this shadowing is to learn about the profession and make sure it is a good fit for you. If you are shadowing "just because" to get hours to apply to school this defeats the purpose in my mind.

PA training and NP training differ substantially.  While a person can learn a lot from shadowing any healthcare professional, someone looking into becoming a PA would be best served by shadowing a PA.

Call them up, demand you shadow a PA. Midlevels are not midlevels. NPs are not PAs.
