Marvin
I’m interested in the idea of joining the National Guard as a PA (65D). I will be graduating in the next year but I hadn’t thought about how competitive the process was. Is an application something that can be rejected? Thanks
TDIowa
Not usually. It would depend on how many open slots are available in your state. That being said if all were filled, and I doubt they are they would allow you to join and double slot you against another PA slot or slot you with a empty Physician slot
CAdamsPAC
You can always look into joining the US Army Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) which gives you the ability to serve as a PA without being assigned to a particular unit and you can laterally transfer to or between either NG or USAR units. ArmyPA
The Army tends to grow their own PAs through the IPAP at Ft. Sam. When I I was active duty I spoke with some folks at MEDCOM...the Army has about 200 IPAP slots per year but only took about 5 PAs off the streets. That being said I met 2 PAs that were not IPAP grads in my career. One of them verified why we like to train our own as he referred all patients for steroid injections where we IPAPers were all comfortable doing this on our own...but I digress. You can always try, your luck will be based on the needs of the Army that particular year (i.e. attrition, how many IPAP failures the previous year, etc.) but I think you would have a lot better luck with the Navy or Air Force as I know they use HPSP a lot for PAs. Could also look at the Coast Guard depending on where you live.
UGoLong
My buddy from PA school went into the Army after graduation and served with the 4th ID in Afghanistan as a Captain. It happens.
CAAdmission
If you are looking at the military, make sure you get everything down in writing.

Fully understand and accept the term exigencies of the service as part of the joining process. It is in the fine print of your contract.
