BirdDogPA
Curious about the size and volume of the single coverage EDs. I’ll go first … 10 beds and about 12k volume a year.
ohiovolffemtp
One of my hospitals: 8 beds with 3 physician office rooms available for flex expansion, approx 8,500 visit/year. Another: 12 beds, volume about 9K Another: (has a 10 hour mid-shift PA/NP shift as well as a 12 hour day doc and 12 hour night PA/NP shift): 10 beds, + 3 hallway beds and a triage room: about 19K visits
Moderator LT_Oneal_PAC Posted August 4, 2022 Moderator Share Posted August 4, 2022 5 beds with 3 clinic exam rooms available for expansion, 5k volume per year last I checked, though I think that has gone up exponentially after COVID. Hitting new record numbers every other month
Moderator EMEDPA Posted August 4, 2022 Moderator Share Posted August 4, 2022 4 jobs, all rural CAH, 2 are solo coverage. The solo jobs: 1. 6 beds plus a triage room for quick stuff. 3500-5000 pts/yr. 2. 7 beds. 5000-7500 pts/yr Both sites seeing record #s this year. BirdDogPA
Thank you guys for the stats. Hopefully more PAs will practice in these settings.

Folks drawn to these setting tend to be either former paramedics or residency grads or both. Typical grads today are no longer paramedics, but the number of residency grads is increasing, so it will be interesting to see how many EM PAs practice solo a decade from now. Last time SEMPA did a survey, I believe the number nationwide was around 250 PAs. (2.5% of all EMPAs when there were 10,000 of us).

Hopefully the majority of these will be high quality. There is one in my state now but quality seems very lacking. My dream Is to see some of your larger facilities staffed solo at night by a PA. When I worked at a level 3 trauma center that only had single physician coverage from 2am-7am I tried to make the case during Covid peak that a qualified PA could provide coverage. Of course that was promptly shot down.
ohiovolffemtp
State laws may come into play. Ohio has a requirement that every ED must have a physician.

The state I’m in ( Southeast) the law does not go into that much detail to specify for an ED. Falls under the general mileage rule which is pretty generous (50+ miles). I know SW GA has multiple EDs with solo coverage done by PAs.
