Two offers, one signed contract. What to do? PLEASE HELP

Hey guys!

 

I am a recent grad and have accepted an offer in ED at a local hospital (50 min commute from my house). It's an Independent Contractor position, with $45/hr pay for new grads and no benefits. $1300 CME reimbursement. 12 hr shifts, with average of 15 shifts per month. I don't worry much about benefits (short term) since I can get basic medical/dental coverage from my husband's job. I accepted the offer and signed a contract, and should be able to start in a few weeks after they are done with the credentialing process.

 

Meantime, I was called in for an interview at the ED at the hospital that is right across from the street from where I live (7 min commute) I figured I'll go and check it out, just to see what "I would be missing." The interview went exceptionally well, and I have a strong feeling that I will get an offer from them as well. I don't know the exact numbers yet, until I get the official offer, but it's a union position and they offer salary that's in mid-70s, with full benefits (medical, dental, vision, paid vacations, CME, 401K, etc). 4 10 hour shifts per week.

 

I had another couple of offers in other specialties, but I think ED would be a good place to start in order to solidify the knowledge I got in PA school and improve my procedural skills.

 

So, now I am confused... The responsibilities and set-up are about the same at both hospitals, with same amount of supervision and "busy-ness," so I would learn pretty much the same at either hospital. Although hospital A has a better reputation than hospital B, and would probably look better on my resume in the long run. But hospital B is literally in my backyard and will save so much time (and money) on commute! So what do I just stay put and stick with the original offer at hospital A, or terminate that contract and go with offer from hospital B? How do I choose? And can I terminate the contract before starting to work?

 

Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated!

45 and an independent contractor? Wow. You know you will have to pay ALL of the taxes and the employer won't pick up any. Neither option is great as both are extremely low for ER gig. The amount of liability you will be exposed to in the ER is huge which is why pay should reflect that. But unless you have a grace period where you can back out on the contract, I think you are stuck there for a little while. It will look really bad to accept an offer and sign then immediately renig and back out. You will definitely burn that bridge but if you are ok with that then I would go with option B as the hospital is way closer. But renegotiate after 6 months as that is extremely low in my book. What area are you looking in?

how about full time at hospital A(honors the contract) and part time or per diem at hospital B? that way after a yr if hospital B is better you can quit A with a clean conscience having kept your word.

that money is very low. new grad in em should make 80-90k/yr plus a full benefits package. no bennies? I would be looking for big bucks(like 60/hr+). in my neck of the woods the no benefits rate is around 70/hr.

Thank you for your input guys!!! I decided to stick with hospital A (and maybe do part time at hospital B - thanks for the idea, EMEDPA! - get that experience for a year or two and then move on for better paying positions. It is almost impossible to get into ED in our city without experience, so I figured I better get my foot in the door while I have this opportunity so I will be able to be calling shots later.

I decided to stick with hospital A (and maybe do part time at hospital B - thanks for the idea, EMEDPA! - get that experience for a year or two and then move on for better paying positions. It is almost impossible to get into ED in our city without experience, so I figured I better get my foot in the door while I have this opportunity so I will be able to be calling shots later.

 

If you are going with the 1099 (contract work) job be sure as someone else mentioned, to pay your quarterly taxes on time. The penalty is a big one and you pay your taxes every quarter. You should consult a tax specialist.
