Haven't posted in a while... been so busy!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

It's been quite a while since my last post, but not without good reason! I've been busy with finals at my university and also finishing up the EMT curriculum and taking the final. I figured I'd share my grades for the semester and I how I faired with it all:

Chem-A
Bio-B
Bio lab- A
Spanish- C :/

EMT course at local community college- Passed with an A and was only one in my squad offered a full time position with MEDIC ems agency. (Actually got the job before taking my state exam, which is Friday, but I've killed my clinicals and my final and my trauma and medical assessments, so it's a big honor and have no doubts about the state exam)

I'm really excited! Just to think 6 months ago I was eager to get started but at the same time nervous at what to expect, and I was able to manage a full time schedule while training as an EMT and actually getting put to work while on my 12 hour ride alongs. I had cardiac arrest pts that came back, MVC's, OD's, seizures... etc. I fell inlove with it even more after every call and doing my PCR's.

I will be finishing my last 2 years of university while working full time as an EMT with this huge and amazing agency. I know that it will be no simple task but I wake up thinking about PA every single day; not once have I flinched at my goals and I've reached out to PA's in my area that are willing to let me shadow!

For those that don't know or remember me posting, I'm in North Carolina and I attend UNC Charlotte. I'm going to apply to every NC program there is, but I am going to shoot as high as I can and make a B line for Duke and hopefully everything I'm doing will be noticed. I know a lot of people don't like for students to get caught up on a name, but I would really like to attend that program, but I would gladly attend the other programs, if I am accepted.

That's all I have to report for now. I will be busy this summer, starting next week after my state exam, starting a 6 week refresher academy and learning the agency protocols and navigation, working everything on the trucks.. etc. And then 8 weeks FTO as a third on a truck and then out with my partner!

I'll be sure to keep those interested updated, but thought I'd share that! It's been a long semester and there's no slowing up since I have all of this coming up but I am ready! I hope everyone is doing well and as always... any criticism is gladly accepted and taken into consideration!

Take care, y'all!

Very cool! Welcome to EMS. You'll learn a lot on the job, not only about patient care but about yourself. Just don't forget to keep your grades up in the fall :)

Awesome. I don't attend your school anymore but I did for a while to get some pre reqs in. If you need some help with some professors, I can give you some pointers.

Thanks! I have a full load of 14 hours next semester and working full time on the medic truck so I'll be busy! I have sarah wells for chem, wisner for bio, and idk who's my lab TA yet for either one of them. I'm taking physics in medicine, which, is actually taught by a doctor and they only have the class every couple of years so I'm excited! And I'm taking spanish 2.

You are applying this term? Thats a lot of work.

Oh no no no. Haha. Sorry for any misunderstanding! I still have another 1.5 years of schooling before I complete all of my pre-reqs. I'm working full time with Medic EMS so I'll have plenty of PCE hours to contend and hopefully will shine bright in the application cycle!

Glad to see you're still hard charging Michael. Stay motivated and don't look back. I know we talked about this before, but don't forget to look at Med School as an option as well. Keep us informed and good luck!

Hey Greg! Good to hear from you. I definitely remember our conversations. I've had time to look at that option over this last semester and especially as an EMT and interacting with them in the ER, as well as my own PCP and other specialists that I've seen. The PA profession works really well for me and what I hope to get out of it; it's certainly a benefit since I may want to try my hand at something else further on down and not have to worry about doing a residency for it. Where I live the PAs have a lot of autonomy and are treated with a lot of respect in every healthcare situation I've been in thus far. All of the above really keeps me bold in the belief of following the PA route. I'm still going to stay in NC since I have a family to think about. I think the hardest part will be not only on me missing the time spent with them but also getting them to understand it's really going to take most of my time for that solid two years. I still have a year and a half/two years before I start this whole applying process so any guidance would be greatly appreciated! I'll continue to give updates. I hope everything is going great your way, man! Keep me updated as well.

-Michael
