skicrs
I was reviewing the different specilties on this site and I have not seen much talk regarding ID medicineand of HIV as a sub. Are there any current PA's here that have worked in this field? If so what are the pros and cons? Thanks I am a new member here and I am impressed with the information that it has shown me thus far. I am now just applying to several PA schools and although I am not getting ahead of myself, this site helps with the motivation factor and is a reminder that someday this will be a good career. jazzyjoker
When I went on my interview for school, one of the interviewers was in Infectious Disease. She seemed very happy with her choice. Seems like a very dynamic field with the continual mutations and developing resistances. I'd imagine you really really have to stay on top of the literature. xxbowiexx
one of my faculty professor works in ID and he's brilliant. He enjoys his work immensely and on occasion would invite his patients to come talk to us. I give alot of credits to ID specialists, tough field for sure. I consulted with one yesterday for a tough case, and learn quite a bit from him afterward. I say you should go for it.

SocialMedicine
Plenty of PAs and NPs work in HIV medicine. If you are interested in this work and have some experience in general medicine it should be an easy grab. Provided you are in a major city or other area with HIV prevalence. Infectious Disease is another story. There isnt ALOT of ID work out there now that many of their diseases are either controlled or not in the ID model any more (HIV Hepatitis etc)
Joelseff
I currently work in HIV part-time and will be full time in March. I worked 7 years pre-pa as a MA and Clinical Coordinator for a HIV practice. Its a great field. It's pretty much Primary Care because besides your pt's HIV, they have other comorbidities that you have to also manage like HTN, T2DM, Hyperlipids etc. You should shadow an HIV MD/DO or PA/NP and see for yourself. Contrarian
Joelseff... is HIV Medicine still a required part of the graduation requirements at PCAP...??? If I remember correctly... we were required to see about a weeks worth of HIV patients prior to graduation when I attended. I remember doing my rotation with the HIV doc that ran the clinic at San Mateo County Hospital. I met him while doing my ED rotation there. Joelseff
Hey C, We had "HIV/AIDS" in our MCR's but it wasn't a required MCR for our class. I think it should be but maybe finding enough PCP/FP practices who dont refer out their HIV pts were getting scarce so they kept it as optional MCRs.
