wabota
The idea of starting your career as a PA in family practice to get general experience first is one I've had drilled into me since I first started looking into the profession. Recently a recruiter gave me the exact opposite advice - specialize first, and you'll be more appealing to everyone down the road, because you'll have your educational background in primary care AND experience in a specialty. I would really love to end up working in pediatrics at a children's hospital. I don't think that's going to happen as a new grad, so I'm hoping to find a job that will make me a more desirable candidate to a children's hospital in the future. I'm looking into one general peds position, one endocrinology position (takes patients >10 years old), one rural family practice position, and one pediatric psych position... aside from weighing the work environments, the salaries, and the locations, which would look best on a resume? Are there any specialties I should avoid completely? Whose advice is actually best for the future - specialize first, or general practice first? Administrator rev ronin Posted April 22, 2014 Administrator Share Posted April 22, 2014 Your recruiter is blowing smoke. If you specialize early, you will find it impossible (or at least, quite difficult) to break out of your initial niche--this was certainly true in Information Technology, which is at least as specialized as medicine. Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 22, 2014 Moderator Share Posted April 22, 2014 yup , agree with above. in your situation I would probably do fp or general peds first then transition to specialty peds later....
wabota
Thanks all for the advice! Good to hear I wasn't crazy all these years for expecting to start in general practice. :)
