MacMac1000
I have been able to accrue 30ish hours of shadowing, but I have not had luck finding more places to shadow on the weekends; I am unable to leave work to shadow now due to staffing shortage. I have been completing virtual shadowing as a way to get more hours and am unsure if it is worth the effort or not. Does anyone have any insight into this? I plan to apply to PA schools at the beginning of the 2023 2024 application cycle and hope this does not severely hinder my chances at getting interview(s). Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 10, 2023 Moderator Share Posted April 10, 2023 Shadowing is probably the least important part of your application. If you have any at all they will check the box and move on. Don't lose sleep over it.
HHPA25
Im not sure if the COVID essay is still a thing this cycle but that was the perfect place to describe difficulties in shadowing after COVID began. I had probably about the same amount of hours, and am starting a program in August. Good luck!
UGoLong
The advantage of shadowing is to be more certain that being a PA is what you want to do. You might see if you can shadow in an ED or at an urgent care since that might expand your night and weekend opportunities. Good luck! HopefulPASomeday
Yes, I don't think accruing shadowing hours is super important. It seems like most schools say things like "we recommend ____ hours of shadowing". Like another poster suggested, they probably just want to make sure you understand the role of a PA and actually want to be one.
