marktheshark89 Posted June 20, 2016 http://annals.org/mobile/article.aspx?articleid=2529481 Basically they conclude that PAs and NPs are no more wasteful than physicians, dispelling a myth that PAs and NPs are less confident and therefore provide lower quality care and order more unneccesary testing and referrals.
Guest Paula Posted June 21, 2016 The terminology of the study was rather odd, don't you think? "No more wasteful" and "low value health services" for example. I get it that they were comparing services for URI, back pain, etc and apparently those are low value health services. All in all, a decent study to show that we proved basically equal if not similar care for the low value services. Do you think there could even be a comparison to "high value services" which might mean care for MI, PE, sepsis? Are there enough APCs who work in areas where they manage the "high value services" autonomously to the point that it could be studied? Possible only in rural areas where PAs are solo providers, and not in a large, hospital or university medical school based system. I will take the outcome of the study for PAs as a positive.
JPMiller Posted June 22, 2016 Paula, I think they mean low value, as in there is low value in ordering an MRI for every headache or back pain. There is low value in Rxing Abx for a cold. Not low acuity.
rpackelly Posted June 22, 2016 Yes, "low value care" is a euphemism for "studies, treatments, or referrals that are inappropriate and a waste of money".
Moderator ventana Posted June 24, 2016 Moderator it is data like this that we can use to say we are not inferior to Doc's and need FPA and FULL REIMBURSEMENT
