First time applicant to medex

Recommended Posts

Question...I have heard through a few pas that medex won't even look at first time applicants?? This could be a little dated info because the pas had applied 10 years ago. Any info is appreciated!

Definitely NOT the case... I was also a first time applicant and I will be graduating in August. I had a lot of PA's that told me something similar. In fact, I had the mindset that I would not get in on the first try since most that I talked to that had graduated from MEDEX said they had to apply 2-4 times before getting in.

I believe that being prepared and getting your stuff in on time, before the early application date (September) is key.

Also, putting your BEST SELF forward during an interview if you get one is probably the best advice I can give you.

Hey,

I've been researching which PA schools I would like to apply to and MEDEX is defintely at the top of my list. I've read a lot of forums regarding MEDEX's preference for applicants in the north west and with me being from Florida I'm nervous that could hurt my chances of being admitted as well as my low number of HCE. I'm hoping if I tell you guys what I bring to the table that I could get some insight on my chances.

My name is Lily, I'm 26 years old and live in Florida. I graduated from FSU in 2012 with two bachelors degrees in majors that are completely unrelated to the medical field. The majors were, Communication and Chinese Language and Culture. I always knew I wanted to help people, I know how cliche that sounds but it's true. After graduating with my bachelors I received a scholarship from the Chinese government to move to China and study for another year there. I did that and loved it. I'm conversational in mandarin Chinese. I moved back and started working in the corporate world as a grant writer for a large non-profit that worked to place foster children in loving homes. I quickly realized the corporate field was not for me.

I returned to school and am working on my science prereqs. My cumulative GPA is 3.5, my science GPA is 3.9 I believe. That includes: stat, anatomy 1, bio 1 , chem 1 and 2. I have 2 years volunteer experience volunteering at a homeless shelter. I'm currently a volunteer as a child-life specialist at a children's hospital. Also, I am a CNA at a hospital as well as at a nursing home. I'm also a tutor at my college for A&P. However, because I'm new to the medical field, I only have about 500 direct patient care hours. I know that's insanely low for MEDEX. I didn't know if I still had a chance due to my interesting background or if I should take a year off once school ends and work more with my HCE. I would move to Seattle in a heartbeat, my cousin lives there and loves it.

Thank you so much for any insight,

Lily

MEDEX requires a minimum of 2,000 hours of direct PCE, and states that they must be accrued by the October 1 deadline. This requirement is mandatory and they will not consider applications below that number, I have been told

in information sessions.
