Prerequisites for PA School or IPAP

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am new and I'm happy I came across this forum.

A little about me:

I have a foreign bachelors degree in maths which has been evaluated (cgpa 3.83/4.00) and I am currently rounding up my masters also in Maths this semester (3.47 cgpa).

I am currently considering changing my career to the medical field through the Army so I enlisted as a Practical Nursing Specialist (I will be an LPN at the completion of AIT)and ultimately I intend being a PA. After working as an LPN in the army for a while, I intend to enroll in a PA program in the Army (IPAP) or enroll in a civilian PA school.

Now my concern is about the prerequisites. I have been taking mostly math courses starting from my days as an undergraduate student, though I took some chemistry, physics and computer science but that has been like 5 years ago. And currently, I have been taking graduate math and stat courses.

In order to complete the prerequisites science courses, do I have enroll in a community college or complete online Associate degree in Science since I already have a Bachelors. Will it be accepted if I complete all my natural science prerequisites in a community college?.

What is the best path to take in order to complete the prerequisites.

Thank you

If you already have a recognized bachelor's degree, you do not need a science degree. You do need the prerequisite courses, and community college is an affordable way to get them.

Be aware that some PA programs will not accept your ACE credit recommendations for AIT, as there is no grade associated with them. That was a problem I ran into as a vet, and it necessitated retaking courses for a grade, such as medical terminology.

Generally, yes. But some programs don't accept community college credits for prerequisites, so just be aware of that going in. I don't have the stats to back it up, but I'd guess that those programs are in the minority.

Yea thank you. I don't plan on transferring courses taken during AIT as most schools do not accept them not even army IPAP. Is it possible I take classes in community college just for grades and not necessarily completing an Associate degree?

Okay thank you. I guess I'jj just have to go with schools that accept them and I hope the army Interactive Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) accept this.

Yes. A lot of pre-PA students do this.

IPAP (and many, many other programs) will accept your CC coursework.

I got into IPAP with almost all of my science pre-reqs coming from community

I'm happy to hear this. Please could I contact you if I have any other questions about IPAP, I've read a lot about how competitive it is. I need to know what makes a strong application and how you were able to complete your prerequisites while serving active duty (all or partly online). How long did it take you to complete the prerequisites and how many times did you apply before you were selected. I will like to have your contact if you don't mind.Thank you

I also took all my pre-reqs at a community college instead of at the two 4-year universities in town, ignoring enough people who insisted I better take them at the 4-years, and I saved an S-ton of money by ignoring them and calling the PA programs I was interested in and asking them directly if they'd accept community college courses. All three progams said yes, and all three programs offered me an interview.
