Looking for input on family medicine PA offer

Hi everyone!

I'm a new graduate and I have this offer on the table.  Just wondering if the salary & benefits sound reasonable?

 

The practice is a family medicine clinic and owned by 4 physicians and employs 3 PAs (I would be their 4th).

I would work 10 hour days x 4 days/week.  It sounds like I would be expected to see about 15 patients/day.

 

Salary is $39.00/hour. I would be evaluated and eligible for a raise in 1 year.

4 weeks of vacation/CME time PLUS 3 sick days, 2 personal days

$1,000 for CME expenses

Malpractice covered by the clinic.

They pay 75% of my individual health insurance premium.

Long term disability: 60% of my pay & it would kick in in 90 days.

Life & Accidental death and dismemberment insurance: $20,000 for each plan and the clinic would pay the entire premium

 

For the 401K they say: "The clinic may or may not contribute a percentage of employees' gross annual wages to the profit sharing account each year (This amount is discretionary and is subject to change based on the clinic's profits each year). Company match is currently 100% on first 3% and 50% on next 2% of employee contribution."

 

Medical/Dental reimbursement: $200/year

 

License renewals: Will pay for re-cert fees and DEA license

assuming 40 hrs/week x 52 weeks/yr that is 81,120/yr. including pay for 4 weeks of leave. sounds ok salary wise. Benefits look a bit thin.

CME could be higher and they should pay state license, dea, aapa dues, medical/dental/vision for you and family, life insurance, retirement, etc.

As a new grad almost 20 years ago at an urgent care run by a family medicine dept I made almost as much with a comprehensive benefits package including 1200 cme and 1200 non-cme(college courses, etc).

I just received more details in regards to the benefits:

15 patients a day as a goal is reasonable.  See if they'll pay you bonus for what you see above 15 pts a day, because by 6 months you should be able to see more than that (and BTW, don't start out seeing a full 15 pts if you're a new grad.  Give yourself 1 pt an hour at first to learn the system, get to know the medicine, take time to run your patients by your supervising physicians).

The salvation of the offer is the four day week and four week vacation.  The money is so-so but for a first job, hey, it's not terrible and it's also not surgery.    The benefits are acceptable.   Look for a better retirement later.   If you like the practice........

The physicians all seemed very enthusiastic and willing to teach so I think the practice will be a great environment for me as a new graduate.

 

I had asked for a minimum of $82,500 for the salary (At $39/hour it comes out to about $81,120).

I based that off these numbers from the AAPA Salary Report:

--The national median for PA salaries is $90,000 ($100,000 with bonus) (page 12)

--Family medicine PA median salary is $85,000 ($94,000 with bonus) (page 12 & 19)

--Total earnings for a PA with < 4 years of experience is $84,000 on average (90,000 with bonus), with the 25th percentile coming in at $76,500 and the 75th percentile coming in at $90,000 ($81,000 and $100,000 respectively with bonus) (page 16)

--Median total earnings for a PA with <4 years of experience in primary care is $80,000 ($85,450 with bonus), with the 25th percentile at $75,000 and the 75th percentile at $85,000 ($79,000 and $95,188 with bonus) (Page 20)

--Median salary for a PA in the state of Wisconsin is $87,000 ($100,000 with bonus) (page 38)

4 day work week is huge

 

you can actually have I life

 

I like TUESDAYS off and then every monday holiday is a four day weekend......

 

overall 80k with a reasonable expectation at patient visits, and some CME $ and time.... 

 

if the clinic is a good place I would take it.....
