airslant
Hey everyone, I am interested in hearing ideas for places to start out in the Commissioned Corps. I currently work at am IHS site and am aware of the BOP being the other major employee of officers. I see all of the departments listed on USPHS also. Does anyone have any suggestions for interesting or less traditional places to serve? My wife wants to go to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, or the Virgin Islands but if like to hear your ideas. Administrator rev ronin Posted September 19, 2016 Administrator Share Posted September 19, 2016 See if you can get US Coast Guard duty in one of those places?
Keepitrural
The PHS has a variety billets but they are somewhat hard to find. You can always go to the USPHS website and click on the duty station map. This allows you to search locations that currently employs officers. From that point it is on you to find out if those areas have any current vacancies. The coast guard sends its members to the IPAP program and usually only uses a PHS PA when they have shortages. That said I do know a few working in the CG. For your geographic preference, your two choices would be air station barbers point on Oahu or Borinquen in PR. However that would be hard to get being that the positions that are usually open are hard to fill spots like Cape May NJ or Kodiak AK. I am a PHS officer (prior CG) currently working as a dive medical officer (DMO) for NOAA in Hawaii and know of one job coming open shortly. It is a DMO position in Hawaii and requires a lot of time away from home, usually 160-200 days a year. But does allow for some neat travel to places like Saipan, Samoa, Midway, etc. If interested feel free to get in touch with me. Otherwise ICE is another agency that is usually short handed and actively recruiting PHS officers. Good luck and let me know if you need any help in the process. Good for them! That's news to me, but welcome news at that.
airslant
That Hawaii job is interesting but that's a lot of time away from my wife. Does anybody else have suggestions for jobs that aren't simply IHS or BOP? Maybe a little more outside the box.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted September 24, 2016 Moderator Share Posted September 24, 2016 There have been jobs posted in the past in AK training community health aides. I was interested in the PHS for quite a while, but the only site within driving distance of me is a federal prison. I'm now too old to serve in the PHS, but may still consider the state dept foreign service medical officer positions as they have no age requirement.
