jsfelder0417
I am going to start rotations in Aug, and we are filling out preferences now. How have your experiences differed between large/academic medical centers and rural hospitals and clinics? I'm just guessing here, but it would seem that large medcens would get the zebras, but there is a lot of competition (students/residents/fellows) for procedures and care. Do you find yourself doing more in rural areas?
Administrator rev ronin Posted June 12, 2013 Administrator Share Posted June 12, 2013 Large center: You see a lot, do a little. You get to see weird, off the wall things that get referred there. You can second assist on anything, but first assist on pretty much nothing. The docs are invested in their residents, and you will be taught by overworked interns for the most part. Rural: You see everything that happens, that may not be that weird, or it might be. There may not be that big a volume, but there might be. The docs there may be rusty, or may love to teach, but you will get 100% of the information they devote to teaching.
CAAdmission
You will get exactly out of rotations what you care to put in. Be prepared to come early, leave late, and be politely assertive and inquisitive. The location is generally secondary.
