MittenMan
I'm currently a Chiropractic student and have about a year left before I graduate. I am at the top of my class (just shy of a 4.0) and do very well in all subjects. I'm hoping to graduate valedictorian. I am certain I want to pursue more education and have thought of applying to medical school but I don't know if I have 8-9 years left in the tank. In most states chiropractors are considered Primary Care Providers, but our education lacks in certain areas. PA is very appealing because I want to be a PCP to it's fullest. When I was working on my bachelors, my mother got into a car accident. From that point on I witnessed a lot of bad medicine and really deterred me from mainstream medicine. Unneeded surgeries, disability, her license taken away, non-stop pain killer prescriptions ... the list goes on. I watched my mother's life become ever so depressing and miserable I had friends that were in chiropractic school and they talked me into going. From what I learned from them they told me what the "good schools" were. I have since learned that these schools are opposite of that. Believe it or not, not all chiropractic schools are crazy..... That's a whole different story. Anyway, now that I am a year from graduating I want more. I want to help people, from the start, and promote smarter medicine. Back to PA I have a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Sciences. I had a lot of life events take place in college and some of my grades reflect them. In my first year I was on football scholarship and didn't take school seriously and got a C in CHM 1 and an AB in CHM 1 Lab (at my first school they were separate classes, so together they make a C+). Then the next semester I got a D on CHM 2. Later on down the road I did pretty well on all my other chemistry classes Orgo basic A, Orgo 1 B+, Orgo 2 B+, and Biochem (higher level) A. I also got an A in Biochem in Chiro school. Pretty much besides that the only class I bombed was my last semester I took a higher level Medical Bacteriology and got a D as well and this is when my parents house burned down, so I should have just withdrew from the class but I didn't. All PA schools have slightly different criteria, but I was wondering if I should retake CHM 2? During my clinical internship I may have time to retake it... Would I be competitive? Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 10, 2013 Moderator Share Posted April 10, 2013 there are a few DC/PA folks here on the forum. hopefully they can give you some guidance. good luck.
GREEN
Those aren't bad grades and when you factor in your graduate level grades you should be competitive. Unless a PA school specifically requires a passing grade in 2 chemistry courses then I wouldn't worry about it. I would at least graduate chiro school though so you can prove your commitment to a graduate program and ability to succeed.
MittenMan
Thanks for the advice! I will for sure be sticking it out with the DC degree.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted April 10, 2013 Moderator Share Posted April 10, 2013 just an fyi..as a DC,PA you would still need to work with a physician if you wanted to prescribe under your pa license.
MittenMan
Prescription rights are not a priority. I want to do this to help people in any way, shape or form.
