JohnFerguson
Why do we use heparinized saline for irrigation/lavage in abdominal surgery cases? What are potential complications of using normal saline for lavage?
Flotsam
I've worked in general surgery for 14 years, and I've never irrigated with heparinized saline. We use NS for just about all cases. A few old school surgeons used to use a dilute mixture of betadine, but I haven't seen that in over a decade. Some surgeons like to add some antibiotics to the irrigation (cefazolin, neomycin, bacitracin, etc...)
