dschelar
Hey all, I was trying to think of an accurate description for "what is a PA?" and this is what I came up with. Feedback appreciated! A PA, or physician assistant, is a licensed practitioner who works with the doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers in a clinical setting to diagnose and treat patients. The PA fills a role similar to nurse practitioners, in that they diagnose and treat patients, prescribe medications, order and interpret lab tests, and assist in surgeries. The difference is that the PA is trained on the medical model, which involves clinical rotations in addition to classroom education. The PA also fundamentally works under the supervision of a physician. This allows the PA to collaborate and consult with their supervising physician on complicated cases to provide the best available healthcare. This physician-PA dynamic also allows extended healthcare access to a community. A physician assistant is not a nurse or a doctor in training, but rather a team member working closely with a doctor, among others, to help provide the best possible healthcare to the largest number of patients possible. andersenpa
A PA, or physician assistant, is a licensed practitioner who practices medicine. In the primary care setting they perform the duties of a physician such as diagnosing and treating patients, prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting lab tests. They also practice in the operative and perioperative care of surgical patients. PAs are trained in the medical model, which involves muslitpsecialty clinical rotations as well as formal didactic classroom education. PAs work in collaboration with physicians. This allows the PA to consult with the physician when their expertise is needed. This physician-PA dynamic also allows extended healthcare access to a community. A physician assistant is not a nurse or a doctor in training, but rather a unique medical professional working closely with the entire health care team, to help provide the best possible healthcare to the largest number of patients possible. .................................................
