New Job Offer Basically Partnership.

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am new to the forums. I have been a PA for 10 yrs plus. I have been "Independently contracted for 8 years. My current employer pays me a " Salary of about 87,000, picks up all my fees and also gives me 3-4 weeks of vacation pay. (but if I don't go on vacation I don't get the money) Also the occasional small bonus. I pay my own health insurance.

I have been offered a position by a doc I know and respect that would be somewhat of a partnership. He is offering me a calculated number which I am assuming will be similiar to RVU based on my collections minus overhead. He will give me examples and the calculation in a week or so. But this is full risk. Unlimited earning potential, but no base salary, no vacation etc. It is an already busy practice and should be able to have 15-20 patients a day easily. I would be involved in the decision making and hiring and firing processes as well. He is a doctor who is held in very high regard in the community.

any thoughts, anybody ever do anything similiar.

thanks

Mike

Sounds like he is well respected and should be a good deal. I have a couple of caveats from experience. Make sure that there is no cap on earnings. Secondly, try to put into the contract that there would be no artificial barriers placed on your ability to see patients.

A long time ago I was in two practices back to back where I got really burnt with such a contract. Fortunately, I had learned from the first experience and had such wording in my contract that I was able to come back and sue for breach for the second situation (however, that was not fun).

Both contracts were for unlimited productivity based salary. In both situations, the physicians, who were also on productivity based pay, managed to dump all their non revenue work on me so they could increase their own productivity. The first group also altered the formula mid stream when I was still "earning too much."

In the second case, my SP and I were employed by the same hospital. He put an actual freeze on my schedule, not allowing a single patient to see me so that he could keep his daily numbers around 35-40 patients (and earn about quart/million/year as a family practice physician). The only reason the hospital hired me in the first place was so that the clinic would qualify for Rural Health Clinic status. HOWEVER, I had added a clause to my contract that said that there would be no artificial limits set on my schedule, and we had the testimony of the scheduler who was told by my SP that if she scheduled a single patient with me rather than him, he would have her fired. So the suit was a slam dunk.

However, in my situation I didn't know my SP that well as I was recruited by the hospital and had only met him once. Sounds like you know this guy much better. But, be aware. Some docs can amaze you in their greediness.

Thanks so much. I am just looking for input. I have even toyed with the idea of my own practice. But I had worked for this doc for a couple of months and we got along great. It would only be Myself and Him in the practice so It would be hard to take patients away from me since he is already overbooked. But I like your advice and I still need to see the calculation His accountant uses. Just nervous since it will be different than that guaranteed check. I think I read your post on a similar thread. That sucks how they tried to defer the patients.

Don't forget to take into account that there are going to be drastic cuts to Medicare when Obamacare is in full swing..

not true - this is just another lie

likely that the specialists are going to get a pay cut - but they are really trying to increase primary care pay - if anything I am expecting a slight raise from universal / obamacare
