Science Teachers chances to get into PA school

I am a High School science teacher. I teach Physics and Chemistry. 

 

I graduated with a Psychology Major and a minor in Biology.

 

Took all the pre-reqs for medical school but decide that PA was a better fit. 

 

cGPA = 3.8

bcpmGPA = 3.5

 

GRE= not taken yet

GPA is fine, being a teacher, especially in the Sciences, great. What about healthcare experience? That's a biggie. Depending on where you are and where you're interested in applying, GRE might not be required, lots of good schools that don't require.

One of the other guys in my class was exactly that: a high school science teacher. He did fine and had great patient interaction skills.

I'm a HS biology/chem/sp ed teacher and will be starting my PA program in Aug. As others have said, getting some good HCE will be important but I feel you can really use your teaching experience to your advantage in your personal statement and interviews. I drew a lot of parallels between education and healthcare (educating patients, working with a diverse population, working as part of a team, interpersonal skills etc.) that I think really helped my application stand out. Remember, many of the people who will be looking at your application/interviewing you are educators themselves, so you have the opportunity to connect with that at a different level than many other applicants.

I have over a thousand hours of volunteer experience at a hospital and clinic. I have also shadowed a family practitioner for over a year.

 

I am taking the GRE in a couple of weeks. 

 

I will expand on my educator experience in my personal statement.
