JohnFerguson
A good friend of mine just found out she is expecting. She works in surgery and is concerned about precautions she should take while in the OR. She is also concerned about the growing belly and reaching the table well as the months go on. Does anyone have experience or advice for her? She is afraid she will be severely limited as her belly gets bigger.
CAdamsPAC
I've scrubbed with more than a few gravid Attendings and Residents........universal precautions and common sense should do it!
greenmood
Agreed. Lots of pregnant surgeons out there. No reason it should be more difficult for a PA. Tell her to get herself some compression stockings and be prepared to sweat more than usual. :)
noapostropheplz
I'm a female PA who has worked in the OR for 13 years. There are a couple of considerations if you are pregnant...if you are using cement (often used in joint replacements) it is recommended (by the device companies) that you do not breathe the fumes while the cement is being mixed. Admittedly, this can be a huge inconvenience to your team. Also, I chose to wear 2 lead skirts that covered me circumferentially (not just a front apron) whenever X-ray was used. Certainly uncomfortable but worth it IMO.
