Hi all,

I finish PA school in August but, as PAs are a government supported project in Ontario, most employers are waiting to hear about funding announcements until they hire. That is, they apply for money to pay a PA in August and the government will announce who gets funding and how much in September/October and we are to start work in November.

As I am a poor student in a lot of debt I need to work right away. My current preceptor (I am on my core family medicine rotation) offered to have me work for him temporarily from August-November while I wait to get a regular job.

I have been with this preceptor for 12 weeks and the practice is close to my home so this is good for me. The thing is, I don't know how I should ask to be paid. We have a socialised medical system that is fee for service where he bills the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for patients seen, procedures done, etc., etc. Should I ask to be paid based on the billings I generate? If so, what percentage?

Or should I ask for an hourly wage?

Advice is much appreciated! :-)

Well, not too many people on this forum know Canadian law, or Canadian reimbursement. I think it's a good thing that people haven't been spouting off uninformed advice, but I wish it was a little less lonely for you Canadian trailblazers... Best wishes in your efforts!

Well idk how it is in Canada. I would ask older pas you know or your program what is customary. Here in the states we usually get a salary with a bonus for billables over a set point. There are also hourly jobs and salaried jobs w/ no bonus.
