Guest JMPA
Happy New Year! With the New Year comes new changes. Effective January 1, 2013, all Physician Assistants in New York State have had our titles changed from RPA-C to PA-C (or from RPA to PA). At the end of May 2012, Governor Cuomo signed a bill NYSSPA submitted to the state legislature. Nicknamed the "PA/SA Bill", Governor Cuomo signed S4376B-2011 as part of Chapter 48 of the Laws of 2012 on May 31, 2012. He directed state government agencies to implement the changes in it by January 1, 2013. This bill does two very important things for our profession: First, Specialist Assistants (SAs) have been placed under their own practice act and are no longer referenced under our practice act. Second, instead of being registered with NYS and licensed through Department of Health regulation, we are now licensed in the letter of the law. This is important because it is no longer subject to bureaucratic control, but became part of NYS statute. By virtue of being licensed in statute, this supersedes our registration. Therefore, effective immediately, our official legally protected titles have changed from RPA-C to PA-C (or from RPA to PA). For more information and to see the language of the law itself, you can visit the NYS Senate's web site: http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/s4376b-2011 NYSSPA is continually working on the behalf of all the Physician Assistants in New York State. We are a member based organization and our strength lies in the number of PAs who are members. Your membership dollars are what give us the lifeblood we need to exist as an organization. We continually handle professional matters that come up including reimbursement issues, lobbying for both state and federal legislation and we work to improve our Practice Act. We are always working to improve patient access to cost-effective, affordable, team-based healthcare. To those on this email distribution who are members, I cannot thank you enough for your support. If you are receiving this email and you are not supporting NYSSPA with your membership dollars, please consider joining/re-joining NYSSPA so that we can continue working for you. Acebecker
It's amazing how easy it is to change the title... Makes one wonder how difficult it would be to change the name of our profession from Physician Assistant to Physician Associate. Methinks not as hard as everyone has thought. I'm not mentioning this to sling mud or bring up the debate again; just as a point about the ability to get it done if we ever decide to do it. Andrew Congratulations, by the way. It is a definite step up.
