LESH
Greetings California PA students The California Office of Statewde Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) has had its funding restored for the NHSC State Loan Repayment program (SLRP) for the next fiscal year. OSHPD had their funding cut drastically for this progrm last year, but they aggressively pursued the issue and were sucessful in restoring the funding to previous levels. Please see this WEB if you are interested. http://www.oshpd.cahwnet.gov/HWCDD/stateloan/index.htm LesH
LESH
Here's a follow up on this http://www.oshpd.cahwnet.gov/oshpdSERVICES/pressreleases/2006/20061208LoanRepayment.pdf The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development is very pro PA;) On another note, the "Physicians Assistant" wording isn't a typo it is written that way in several California laws and regulations. One in particular concerns funding for health professional students and programs. But ya know, as long as OSHPD keep supporting PAs education and PA students the way they do, I can live with it. Good luck in your future PA Endeavors Lesh
LESH
California PA students and interested graduates. Right now there is a bill in the California Assembly to establish the California Physician Assistant Scholarship and Loan Repayment program (A.B. 611) within the Health Professions Education Foundation. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_0601-0650/ab_611_bill_20070412_amended_asm_v97.pdf While there are scholarships and loan repayment opportunities that PA students can apply for from HPEF, PA applicants must compete with Dentist, Dental Hygienist, NPs and CNMs for these awards. PAs have done well obtaining these awards, but should this bill pass monies will be set aside specifically for PAs. Similar to the physician and nursing scholarships the state offers.Right now the bill has NO opposition: I know that CAPA is requesting that we write more letters of support that normal this year, but this is a very busy year for PAs in Sacramento. And if all you got to do is write a letter to move the profession forward then come on guys...write the letters, make the calls, get involved please.... So folks, here you go. I am asking for your help again. Please write Majority Leader Bass http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a47/ and Assemblymember Bill Maze's http://republican.assembly.ca.gov/members/index.asp?Dist=34&Lang=1 with letters of support, tell them why you think PA scholarships based on the NHSC model are needed. Cali PA students if you don't know what to say them PM me and we can figure something out.... Good luck in our future PA endeavors;) Lesh

LESH
lol. PAs- ~306k NPs- ~50k Why the big difference in ammounts given to providers? chris Thanks, I was hoping that wouldn't go unnoticed.;) Now see what I mean when I say OSHPD is very pro PA. I just hope Cali PA students catch on so we can keep those numbers going or they will flip. I can't prove it without a study using double bind controls, but I think that the PA programs tend to recruit and train applicants that meet the mission of OSHPD in greater numbers than the traditional NP program. We also have a few old school PDs out here that are aggressive (I mean aggressive;) ) about getting the infomation out to students. Lesh
OrthoSurgeryPA
I listened to Dr. Carlisle, OSHPD Director, speak at a medical conference last year in Sacramento. He spoke very highly of a "continued commitment" to increase access through the training and utilization of mid-level clinicians. This bodes well for Cali PA students as long as we realize the opportunity being presented to us. :D

Guest Bethp
Question about the loan repayment - Does anyone know if ED PA's can qualify for repayment? I work in a VERY rural ED where folks have little access to health care. The majority of the patient we see are uninsured/ medical/ medicare. Most have no PCP and end up in the ed for PC problems. LESH
Man this has taken a long time to get to this point but here we are. Straight from CAPA please write the Governor: It is time to write to the Governor to ask him to sign AB 638 (Bass). This bill will set up a program whereby PAs can apply for student loan assumption if they agree to work in a designated underserved area. It is part of an ongoing effort to recruit qualified health care professionals to work in underserved areas. Please take just a moment to send an email urging Governor Schwarzenegger to sign this bill into law.
