faith45605 Posted July 26, 2023 Hello all, I'm writing my statement, and frequently refer to a very good friend of mine, but I'd rather not use her actual name in the paper for her sake and privacy. Would using an abbreviation or using the first letter of her name be something acceptable? Quote

Would using an abbreviation or using the first letter of her name be something acceptable? No: I don't think that's professional and looks needlessly mysterious. I would call her "my friend" or once as "my friend Betty" and then just "Betty." You could also use a pseudonym (call her "Jane" instead of "Betty") but I wouldn't say it was a pseudonym in your essay since the reader isn't going to try and track her down. Quote
