HCE with no certification requirments

Recommended Posts

In some states like mine (Florida), you can be certified to work as a CNA by just taking the test, without ever taking a class for it (just watch vids on Youtube to see the skills they test). But if you don't live somewhere where you can do that, you can work in a nursing home doing light nursing assistant work and passing out meds without having any certification (if they do require certification to pass out meds they will train you there).

I volunteered with a therapy department at a nursing home and eventually became a therapy tech. I also got a CNA cert and worked as a CNA for a while (simultaneously), but when a position became open for therapy tech they hired me cause they knew me. It paid a few dollars more and was more enjoyable than the CNA position. I think they would have hired me as a tech even w/out the CNA cert, but it might have helped to have it. Getting the CNA cert took a few weeks and cost me $400. Honestly, I didn't learn anything in that class.

All hospitals need volunteers! Escorting patients is the most common and easiest way to get direct patient contact. Phlebotomy is a choice for a job that doesn't need certification-hospitals/plasma centers will just train you on the job. But openings are pretty rare.

I would be careful with qualifying volunteering and especially "escorting," as direct patient contact. Like others have said, you often need PAID hours.

Also, phlebotomy licensure requirements vary state to state. California, Louisiana (I think) and New York specifically require a license.
