Someone 10 years younger than me: "I'm too old to be a PA."

Recommended Posts

Yep, it just happened, in the Wegmans grocery checkout line.

I had my anatomy book in the cart, so I could study in the cafe. The cashier asked me about it, & said she was going to be a respiratory therapist. "I always wanted to be a PA, she said, "but I think I'm too old." I asked her age: 28.

I'm 38.

(Excuse me while I go bang my head against the wall.)

I finally heard, w/ my own ears, how incredibly WRONG this sounds.

It seemed like a perfectly valid fear at one time, akin to walking out the door and forgetting one's pants. No one wants to start something they can't finish, or be so far behind the learning curve that they feel like a sluggish Watson tagging along behind a Sherlock doctor. But...odds are, if you're asking the question, "Am I too old?" the answer is no.
