TWR
Starting in July of this year the 16 hour consecutive shift for residents is being removed. They will now work 24 or more hours. This can't be a good thing for patients. We had shifts like that when I was in PA school in 1985. It was ridiculous!
coloradopa
Starting in July of this year the 16 hour consecutive shift for residents is being removed. They will now work 24 or more hours. This can't be a good thing for patients. We had shifts like that when I was in PA school in 1985. It was ridiculous! The changes only really apply to interns. The changes are: Interns are no longer limited to 16 hours. All residents are capped at 24 hours (+4 hours for transitions). However, a resident may stay longer to care for a single patient or obtain a unique educational opportunity (important conference or great case), if it is of the resident’s own accord. It is recommended that residents should have 8 hours off between shifts, but this is not a requirement. Residents now should have the needed flexibility to stay later or return to the hospital to care for a patient, within the confines of the 80-hour requirement. The complaints about the current system are missed teaching opportunity and shift work mentality. There is also the argument that increased handoff creates more patient safety issues than tired residents.
