josephn11
Do you think the name of the PA program that you attend matters, or is a successful career mainly contingent on obtaining the PA-C?
Just Steve
There are over 140 different PA programs in the country. Having a recognizable name on your diploma may catch the attention of a potential employer and get your application closer to the top. However..I know some real turds who have graduated from Ivy League programs and some real shining stars who graduated from Podunk, Nowhere. I think the school name on your diploma is one small part of your total presentation to an employer. Disclaimer...PA student who has no real world experience trying to get a job as a PA yet. I live on the west coast where PAs tend to be in higher demand...I don't foresee any real employment issues once I graduate and pass the PANCE. Moderator EMEDPA Posted December 30, 2011 Moderator Share Posted December 30, 2011 school reputation gets you your first job, all else being equal. after that it's up to you.
KCMA79
I think school/name reputation is a factor but not a major one. I used to precept students from a local program and they were so underwhelming in the most basic skills and knowledge that when I later interviewed applicants for entry level clinic positions I found I had a bias toward grads of that particular prog. unless they had experience. winterallsummer
Well, you can have 1 or more VERY good preceptors or instructors that can make a major difference. But that may have very little to do with what school you go to. Honestly I think after your first year working it won't matter much unless you went to a really crap program. Flotsam
I landed my current job in part because the surgeon who hired me had completed his residency at the same institution that ran my PA program. We knew a lot of the same people, and he was able to easily confirm my training & abilities (and also had experience with PAs)
