bcstout
Okay, I get this 50y/o male who complains of posterior R knee and leg pain x 2 days. He denies any trauma to LE. Vitals were normal. Pt denies any other sx. On exam. the R leg and ankle was very swollen and much larger than the L leg. Homan's sign was, however, negative. I ordered a Doppler US and no DVT but a baker's cyst. My question is has anyone seen a popliteal cyst present this way before?
Moderator ventana Posted September 1, 2011 Moderator Share Posted September 1, 2011 Yes yes yes. This is usually the most common finding besides no finding on a rule out duplex. I actally now write dvt vs baker cyst vs edema on the script. Probably have seen 3 dvt 6 baker cysts out of about 30 studies in the past 6 months way common. US tech might even comment on ruptured cyst with fluid accumulating in gastroc and or soleus. I suspect there is some type of inflamorty response that impedes lymph flow and causes swelling in LE
