Guest Posted September 6, 2015 Hey all! How do you guys keep your medical knowledge while practicing in surgery? I feel like my knowledge of general medicine (other than surgical topics) is already slipping and I want to prevent that for when I want to change jobs to ER or something. Do you read Harrison's? Board books? Just do CMEs? Work a 2nd job? PS. I was a new grad when I started this job.
delco714 Posted September 7, 2015 Just my two cents. Big difference in medical knowledge and practicing general medicine! My wife moved from 2 years of sports med to fp. It's rough. I may fair a little better being in urology but not much. My knowledge is ok, but the practice is the rub
greenmood Posted September 15, 2015 I'm doing a lot of internal medicine CME. I'm also doing a sort of case-based learning on the job... whenever we consult another service for one of our patients (think Neurology, Cards, Urology, etc) I'm making sure I understand why they are asking for _____ test/lab/procedure/medication. When I first started I was so focused on learning my own job role that I didn't dig very deeply into a patient's non-surgical issues.

In fact I go as far as to tell the consulting or co managing team (s). You want my help? Sure, let me learn something or use you as a resource when I have questions about my patients... Most enjoy it :).. It's worked out well
