Packrat

Recommended Posts

Questions are pretty straight forward. Lots of scenario based questions with "what is the next step" type of questions. There were a lot of pharmacology in there (MOAs and such). Those questions are very similar to what you'll find on the PAEA End of Rotation exams (EOR) if your school uses those instead of faculty written exams. And I've heard the PAEA EOR exam questions are very similar to what you'll get on the PANCE.

Sites like pancemaster.com and roshreview.com are good sources for practice questions that have some questions that seem nearly identical to the packrat and PAEA EORs. Other good sources with review questions are Lange Q&A, Davis Review Book (has a CD), and A Comprehensive Reciew from O'Connell.

My advice is to not study for the PACKRAT so you have a good bearing as to your strong and weak areas.

PackRat is developed by the PAEA, same organization that developed the EORE.

PackRat is a summative exam that has it's place in 2 areas:

At the end of the didactic year in order to give students an idea of strengths and weaknesses to self direct study during the clerkship year.

Near the end of the clerkship year, again in order to identify areas of strength/weakness in order to maximize and focus study areas.

The PackRats online are retired from years past when this was only one paper exam.

Now the PackRat is similar to PANCE and PANRE, exams composed from an ever evolving test question bank and all electronic.

There are some older studies that correlate PackRat exam score to likely passage or used a calculation to derive a likely PANCE score.

The important point to remember is that the exams you have access to are old and run the risk of containing errors or outdated information. Also may be constructed poorly, making a test question is becoming an art form, trying to assess higher order thinking. So could be taking a test that would not help but actually hinder.
